Pay attention to this important body part.
Every athletic movement of the body requires flexion and extension of the hips. Walking, running, jumping, cycling and, yes, even swinging as in golf and racquet sports. Are you aware that everyone can improve the function of their hips? Because of our lifestyle, filled with modern conveniences that keep us seated for a large part of our day, we are not given the opportunity to develop the maximum power available from the hips.
Notice the average person walking past you on any given day; you will find that their hips align forward of the gravitational line. Case in point: The example photo. If you understand the mechanics of hip function, you will understand why displaced hips are not efficient. Visualize a bow and arrow; if you want to make that arrow soar, you pull the arrow and string as far back as possible. Our hips work the same way. The further back you “flex” at the hip, the higher you will soar. Let’s now go back to the hip forward posture. Working from the bow and arrow analogy, hip forward posture would be like trying to shoot an arrow from a string that is either too taught or has too much slack. Your body can work much more efficiently than this.
